Shiver my timbers!

First this expression can be met in the end of 19th century and supposes the reaction of surprise and distrust. Probably the origins of this phrase are connected with the shivering of the ship during the collision of the ship with the underwater mountain when it was so strong that the ship starts to shiver.
In literature this phrase was used in the novel of Robert Louise Stevenson "Treasure Island". Later he was copied by other authors of pirates' novels and films. However there are no evidences that this phrase was used by real pirates.
The black eye band is the distinctive specialty of many pirates that is the simple rubbish in reality. There is no historical data on the fact that pirates with the hurt eyes covered them with the help of black bandage.
But these bandages have become the characteristic feature of the pirates that are pictured in the novels and films of 20th century. It was the necessary attribute almost of all captains popular in the 20th century and is traditionally drawn in the images of pirates.
The illustrations to the novel "Treasure Island" picture the negative character with two black bandages on his both eyes.
The origins of the traditional pirate's flag Jolly Roger are connected with the word combination "Old Roger" that was one of the devil's names. Later the word "Old" could change into "Jolly".
