Pirates clothes

The majority of us draw the severe person in multicoloured clothes with bandanna on his head and earring in his ear at once in their imagination hearing the word "pirate". But in reality the real pirates had completely another look.
Usually all sailors wore almost the same clothes not depending on the point whether it served them for the pirates ships or trade and military ships. Till the appearance of weaving factories in 19th century the majority of sailors including pirates had only one costume of clothes that they were wearing without taking it off until it became fully shabby.
The clothes of sailors were changing very slowly and were not rather fashionable. Usually sailors had no shoes at all. Since 16th century they started to wear the wide trousers cut between the knee and ankle. This was caused by the objective reasons. Shoes were uncomfortable for walking about the wet deck and climbing the ropes. And the wide trousers allowed moving free and faster. By the way shoes cost a lot at that time.
During good weather sailors were wearing only trousers in tropics. Landing officers and sailors put on the belt and the tunic that reached the knees. During medieval times they were wearing the same tunics that were the long shirt that reminded the Roman toga. They also had stockings that fitted closely to legs. In 16th century they started to wear sloops that were the free trousers that covered the legs almost to knees. On board of the ship captains were wearing the same clothes.
