Bandanna

Bandanna is the bright multicoloured headscarf that pirates and corsairs were wearing on their heads. Such myth came from literature and the imagination of famous writers about pirates. Similar headscarves are the unchangeable element of the legends about the pirates' captains of Howard Paul who was the famous writer and painter. The idea of bandanna was borrowed by other writers and artists as well as creators of adventure films. Since then bandanna changed into traditional hat of corsairs and pirates.

However in real life pirates didn't have specific pirate clothes and were wearing the same clothes as the usual sailors. This was confirmed by both the historical chronics and ancient engravings.

It is also interesting one of the theories about the origins of Jolly Roger that was the name for the traditional pirates flag. In fact according to one version bandanna came from Jolly Roger when after the battle the flag was damaged into pieces. One of the pirates picked it up and put it on his head. Other pirates liked the idea and started to wear such bandannas also.

But this is the mythological origins of bandanna made up by people as in reality there are no evidences that pirates really wore the headscarves. Moreover bandannas were considered to be coloured and bright while the flag of pirates was black with the white skull and crossed bones.
